We've had the most amazing summer weather so far, no rain from 20th April till 3rd July and temperatures as high as 32 deg C. Honest! Beats me why anyone would want to go abroad.
Stavanger is a bustling city at the best of times and June was no exception with the World Beach Volleyball Championships taking place. They truck in a load of sand and build courts along the harbour, creating a fantastic spectacle. We went along to the men's final, a real treat and not a sport we ever thought we'd be seeing here! The winners - the USA - got presented with Viking swords.
Earlier in July we had welcome visitors from Aberdeen, our very good friends The Howards! A great weekend of carousing was had by all and our livers are almost back to normal…sort of…ish. We took the opportunity to pay a visit (the second one for us) to Stavanger's tropical island of Flor og Fjaere, just a 20 minute boat ride from the centre of town. It really is the most surprising place with temperatures around 5 degrees higher than Stavanger at any one time. A proper micro-climate with an impressive collection of palm trees, cacti, lemon trees and a huge array of all kinds of plants.
On July 10th we celebrated one year in Norway. I know…we can't believe it either! It was one of those days with temperatures in the high 20s, so in the evening we headed along the fjord on our bikes and sipped a bottle of champagne in the sun, whilst counting our blessings. It's probably been the quickest year of our lives so far, we must try and slow it down so's we can enjoy the rest of our stay in this beautiful country.
Meanwhile, the next excursion is to the long-awaited Orkney 'bryllup'!! We're heading over this week and can hardly wait to spend some time catching up with all the Byers clan. There will as always be a test for Mr Robertson at the end of it to see if he can remember the names of my many (many) relatives. Of course every 'bryllup' must be preceded by an 'utdrikningslag' or hen party…I see the word 'drink' in there albeit with the letters in the wrong order…appropriate! Judging from the photos, Caroline (aka Goose) got a great send-off!
As I type, the Mulder cat is blissfully unaware that he's about to go to his summer cabin. Time to break out the 'Feliway' calming spray…for him and his owner!!
God sommer!
